As of late Karmila has been exploring with new songs and new sounds, one of which is this funky fresh Beatbox/Karinding collaboration, ey oh!
Outrageous that this could happen anywhere at this day and age, but deeply saddened and disillusioned it happened in Indonesia. Freedom of expression is not a crime but overzealous brainwashing in the name of religion should be…solidarity to those without voices and choices everywhere.
Whenever society gets too stifling and the rules get too complex, there is some sort of musical explosion.”

Happy 2nd Birthday Karmila! November 29th Karmila family and friends celebrated two wonderful years together with a full day of cooking and preparing the most delicious Sundanese feast, general ‘nongkrong’ing, and jamming. No birthday, however, would be complete without a birthday wish, and in preparation for many great years to come a traditional Sundanese ceremony was held. Instead of cake and candles and ice cream there were: incense, mirrors and combs, cigarettes and cigars, flower water, young coconuts, cookies, and other delicacies. But the act of making a wish was the same: asking some great, wise spirit of the universe to bestow some awesome Karinding abilities and good fortune for the future!
The action behind the Manung Galing Kaula Gusti clip looks a little like this rough draft practice piece. There’s no suling here, but it still gives a good idea of what goes into the song…pure unadulterated musical bamboo power, Yongskay!!
FYi.
A quick intro:
What you are actually hearing is some real good, funky music. Good music made from a combination of karinding, celempung, and suling. All three are traditional Sundanese instruments derived from bamboo, and can be thought of in more general terms as karinding:mouth harp, or jew’s harp; celempung:percussion; and suling:flute. Sundanese is one of Indonesia’s many native ethnic groups concentrated in the western part of Java, and are the second most populous ehtnic group after Javenese.
Karinding Militan’s first officially released video Manung Galing Kaula Gusti. The basic premise behind Manung Galing Kaula Gusti is being at one with the universe, and realizing that connection has an impact in everyday life and our every day actions carry the weight of this connection and respect for nature and the cosmos. Good stuff.
